The Biodefense and Public Health Database (BioHealthBase)
Bioinformatics Resource Center (BRC) provides a comprehensive
genomic and proteomic data repository for five pathogenic organism
groups that pose a threat to public health. The BioHealthBase BRC
also provides an analysis platform and appropriate tools to
facilitate genomic and proteomic study of these pathogens. The
goal of the BioHealthBase BRC is to provide a resource to the
scientific research community to facilitate the development of
vaccines, diagnostics and therapeutics for these pathogens. Click

BioHealthBase in Transition
October 1, 2009 - The BioHealthBase BRC contract ends in December 2009, at which time the BioHealthBase resource will cease to exist. The BioHealthBase Team is keeping the application operating until then as a service to the research community. During the next 5 years, the PATRIC team at the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute will support all pathogenic bacteria, including Mycobacterium and Francisella. The EuPathDB team at the University of Pennsylvania will support all eukaryotic pathogens, including Microsporidia. The BioHealthBase team is working with PATRIC and EuPathDB to ensure that all of the data and useful analysis and visualization tools developed and implemented at BioHealthBase will also be available at these resources in the near future. Support of ricin will be discontinued.
The BioHealthBase team will continue to support influenza virus as the Influenza Research Database (www.fludb.org) and will also support all pathogenic viruses as the Virus Pathogen Resource (ViPR) for the next five years (www.viprbrc.org). It has been a privilege to support the microbiology research community for the past 5 years. We look forward to continuing our work with the virology community in the future.

- Unique features for influenza
- The influenza component of BioHealthBase has now been formally converted into the NIAID-sponsored Influenza Research Database. While still available from the old URL, IRD now has a new URL: www.fludb.org.
- BioHealthBase will be phased out in December 2009, leaving only the IRD component. In addition to the IRD, the BioHealthBase team will be supporting the new Viral Pathogen Resource – ViPR, beginning October 1, 2009.
- The initial implementation of the IRD phylogenetic tree editor allows you to edit the contents of a segment working set by removing “leaves” from the phylogenetic tree created from it.
- The initial implementation of the IRD Tree Decorator allows the “leaves” or “branches” of a phylogenetic tree created from a working set to be highlighted based on such characteristics as host, country, and subtype.
- IRD now identifies the presence of twelve additional sequence-derived phenotype markers for such features as drug resistance, virulence, and transmissibility to humans. Sequences containing these features can be identified using the Phenotype Search.
- The Surveillance data search now allows you to download all avian surveillance data or human clinical data in tab delimited format.
- The Short Sequence Search now allows you to search for an amino acid sequence using any of 17 pre-computed databases consisting of all sequences of each influenza protein or of all influenza proteins.
